During all this and this, I've found a better way to change an char's
appearance, which won't need "enableracemenu" and thus won't crash
MW. You do need TES Enchanted Editor (TES EE) and the TES CS.
Here's how:
- Either open up a mod or vanilla MW
containing the new hair and/or head you want.
- Note down
the ID part of the new hair and/or head you want.
- With TES
EE, open up the savegame containing the character who you want to
give the new hair and/or head.
- Locate "NPC_player". It's
under the "Non Player Characters" tab.
- Have a good look,
and find the field which has "HeadID" next to it. Change that into
the ID you've noted down, if you want your character's head changed.
- Repeat the previous step if you've got hair to change.
Look for the field with "HairID" ext to it this time, and ofcourse
you'll need the new hair's ID.
- Save and exit TES EE
There, done. Presto! Your character has new hair and/or new
head, without crashing MW, without loosing spells, and without
loosing your level

Since when
does enableracemenu crash Morrowind? I use it all the time and it
works fine.

Then, since I
use it, I supose...I've never had it work flawlessly. I'd loose
level, system stability and spells in an combination of all those
three.

that usually
happens if you change race... but still good method none the less -
its rather similiar to how I started modding

I'd loose level
This is probably from choosing
a new class in the menu afterwards, not changing the
race.

system stability
Only reason I can think of for
this is if you have an invalid head/hair object (the mesh doesn't
exist or something)

and spells
If you change from one race to
another of course you'll lose the spells/powers for the race that
you were.

I like it,
too. I've always had problems with enableracemu. I just tried your
method and when I load my savegame in EE, my char's stats seem to be
messed up. I mean my current character is lvl 31 and in EE, it says
like 40 health and 140 max fatigue, which is obviously wrong. I just
wonder if I can change head and hair and save it without my stats
being messed up in game aswell...

Good, that's means I'm not the

Well, try and find out...when
you save, EE automaticly creates a backup, named [filename of edited
file].bak

if you just

From my meddling in this area,
I've found that Morrowind doesn't care if you specify an invalid or
empty mesh path. My test character currently has no head, just a
stump of a neck, and no error-marker model either.

There are two references to player
stats in a save game; the base stats are under NPC_ player; current
stats are held in NPCC PlayerSaveGame (appears in EE as NPCs
Altered/Killed by Player).
HellWolve: Co-incidentaly, I've
been experimenting with this exact procedure myself; I'm currently
coding a Save Game Editor that should make the arduous task
you describe much easier .

Just do a search at Euro
Morrowind. There you'll find it.

Useful to
know, thought I never had any problems with
enableracemenu.
The only thing you must be sure to do for it
to function properly is never use it more than once in a
Morrowind session (character creation counts as one).
If
you're not satisfied with a result, do NOT use it again, exit
Morrowind, relaunch it and reload your game before using it again.
If you do use it more than once in a session then yeah, it'll start
to mess things up.

Something
different: This way, you should be able to select a female head for
a male character and vice versa... you can't do this with
enableracemenu, can you?
